Annual Fair Traditionally, the Alphen aan den Rijn Annual Fair is organized on the 3rd wednesday of september.
The roots of the Annual Fair date back to may 15 1894, when the municipal council of Alfen decided to institute a “yearly free horse-fair, to be held on the third Wednesday of the month of September”. The horse-fair was organized up to the seventies of the last century. When horse-fairs started to disappear from the streets in the Netherlands (as well as in Alphen aan den Rijn) the Alphen aan den Rijn municipality decided to organize a annual fair on this particular day.  Nowadays the Annual Fair is the yearly highlight of the “Alphen Days”, on which a varied program is offered to citizens of Alphen aan den Rijn, with a host of activities, events and objects of interest. The Annual Fair area is logically divided into areas for stalls and areas for various side activities.  Traditional activities such as the annual fancy fair, the horse-fair, the children’s fair and the antique and book fair will always return, each with their own location inside the market area. www.jaarmarktalphenaandenrijn.nl |
